Reflect on a visit

Half of it is gone by the time you get home.

The appointment lasts ten minutes, and afterwards most people remember about half of it, roughly. Ten minutes that same evening are enough that the check-up in six weeks, the new medication, and the question that stayed unanswered no longer depend on how well you remember later.

About 20 seconds of processing. Whatever you would rather not write down, you leave empty.

What was said, what is to be done, what stayed open.

The third section is the important one and the one people skip. What stayed unclear is not interpreted, it is kept for next time.

  1. The appointment

The date and, if you like, who you saw. If you prepared the appointment here beforehand, the note attaches itself to that preparation.

  2. What you want to keep

What was said, new medications, agreed check-ups and errands. These become tickable items that stay open until you close them.

  3. What still bothers you

Whatever was unclear or confusing. It is not interpreted, it is rewritten as a question for next time, which is then already waiting in your next preparation.

Today's note is the preparation for the visit after next.

Appointments are usually treated one at a time, even though they form a series. This tool closes the gap between two of them.

The appointment

Ten minutes, a lot said.

That same evening

Ten minutes, written down.

In the weeks after

Open items get ticked off.

At the next appointment

The open question is already on the page.

What comes after should not hang on your memory either.

A note is half of it. What was agreed still has to happen weeks later, long after the appointment is over. So whatever stayed open across your notes gathers on one page called "Next steps". It is not another tool to learn, it is the same loop seen from the middle.

  1. A date, if you want one

On the note you can say when the follow-up should be done by, and when you are next seen. Both are optional. Without a date an item simply stays open until you close it.

  2. Two reminders, then quiet

Three days before the date, and on the day itself. That is all. The message only says that something is waiting, never what: push notifications pass through Apple and Google in plain sight, so not a word about your health travels in one.

  3. You decide what comes with you

When you start the next preparation from a note, Continuum first shows what stayed open and lets you untick anything that should not come along. Nothing is carried over behind your back. The reason for the next visit is always yours to write, never guessed.

Write it down while you still know it.

Even three keywords will do. Whatever you put in becomes an ordered note that is still there next time.
